Popular Mechanics recently ranked Oakland the 3rd Best Startup City in America! We can’t say that we’re too surprised, Oakland’s gravitational pull does seem to attract a unique subset of avant-garde thinkers that stand more-so “outside of the box” than their Bay Area neighbors.
Oakland’s history of grassroots leadership and cultural activism have most likely aided the bevy of maker spaces, catering to youth and adults, to flourish. Oakland Makers Jon Sarriugate (Form and ReForm) and Karen Cusolito (American Steel) are also highlighted in the article.
Popular Mechanics studied 14 cities for their Startup City project, and we would like to thank them for the honor!
Kudos to Margot Lederer-Prado from the City’s Economic Development Department for helping to make this happen!
